Job Description

The assistant curator assists the museum curator with all activities within The Alphabet Museum, the Townsend Archives, the JAARS Archives, and the Townsend Lobby Exhibits. Manages the staff and ensures that policies, budgets, and goals are established and maintained. This is a full-time volunteer position or may be filled by a staff person who raises their own support. This position reports directly to the Museum & Archives Curator.

Position Responsibilities

  • Communicates the vision for the museum, tours and archives
  • Communicates JAARS history, mission and work
  • Assists in managing the visitor tour experience of the JAARS base and museum
  • Monitors tour guide schedule and performs museum and base tours if needed
  • Aids in educational programs, museum events and training, and coordinates with JAARS events staff on JAARS events
  • Assists with social media planning
  • Collaborates in maintaining and updating merchandise in the museum gift shop
  • Collaborates in updating, planning, designing, and constructing new exhibits
  • Assists with museum collections management
  • Assists with the digitization of the Townsend Archives and the eventual cataloging and digitization of the JAARS Archives
  • Performs any other tasks as needed

Position Requirements

  • Passionate about history, museums and missions
  • Excellent communication skills, both in written and oral form
  • Good computer and technological skills
  • Familiarity with Google Suite preferred
  • Demonstrates skills in leadership and teamwork
  • Personable
  • A self-starter, flexible and able to work independently
  • Demonstrates a deep and growing walk with the Lord Jesus, that includes personal growth and the ability to support others in their spiritual growth
  • Embraces the vision, mission and core values of JAARS, and helps others live them effectively
  • Must be able to work in the US

Education and Experience

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Linguistics, Missions, Education, Anthropology or related field
  • Preferred at least one year of museum experience
