Job Summary

Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program, and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.

The Opportunity

The J. Paul Getty Museum is seeking an educator with a passion for engaging younger audiences with innovative and ambitious projects. Reporting to the Senior Education Specialist, the Associate Education Specialist for Teen Development Programs is part of a small team within the Education Department that supports a broad slate of youth programs to include Unshuttered, Student Gallery Guides, and Teen Lab. The work involves not only extensive collaboration with other divisions within the department, but other programs and departments across the J. Paul Getty Trust, as well as organizations across Los Angeles and the country that provide programming or services to young audiences. The successful candidate will be dynamic, enthusiastic and experienced in assisting programs with creative content and complicated logistics, and possesses a working knowledge of practices in project-based learning, design thinking, youth development programming, and 21st century skill building - communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving. A background in youth development with a focus on working with under-represented, underserved and at-risk audiences is highly valued.

As part of the Education department and under moderate supervision this individual collaboratively develops, implements and manages teen programs and projects to foster engaging experiences with art, from art production to teaching about works of art, and across multiple subject areas. Collaborates on cross-functional teams to achieve educational programming goals. Monitors budget/spending and assists project management for the team, including administrative tasks. Successful candidates will have a track record demonstrating their passion for working with diverse youth and audiences who are interested in the arts and museums. Will teach, train and supervise on a regular basis.

Major Job Responsibilities
    Assists the development of program goals and objectives using museum engagement strategies to meet the needs of teens
  • Collaborates in planning program and initiative resources, including curricula, budgets, promotional materials, and production/project schedules
  • Communicates and collaborates extensively with internal and external experts in various fields, including teens, youth organization administrators, curators, museum educators, and artists
  • Works to inspire curiosity, enjoyment and understanding of the visual arts by working with teen audiences
  • Coordinates program and project logistics on-site and online
  • Collaborates on the creation of resources for teen audiences
  • Provides technical assistance and basic subject matter expertise throughout project development, implementation, and assessment stages
  • Monitors daily operations and provides direction to project staff and external vendors according to established guidelines, procedures, and policies
  • Negotiates, contracts and liaises with external experts and artists
  • Teaches with the collection, in alignment with the department teaching philosophy, and serves as a resource for teaching staff
  • Serves on collaborative project teams to advise and develop current and future Education Department initiatives
  • Provides guidance to project staff and/or work group members
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-5 years of project/process management and subject area experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Keen enthusiasm for working and collaborating with teen audiences and building a sense of community between the audiences and the Getty.
  • Knowledge of current museum and art education practices, and curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of visual arts practice, local artists and creative resources.
  • Ability to think creatively and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact.
  • Strong written and editorial skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to succeed within a collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to accurately prioritize concurrent projects.
  • An understanding of digital education and technology.
  • An understanding of marketing and social media practices.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Confidence in research and presentation skills, in working with the Getty collection from both sites, as needed.
  • The position will be primarily based at the Center, with flexibility in working at the Villa as needed for program support.
