Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

The assistant coach is responsible for supporting all aspects of a competitive NCAA Division III program. The assistant coach assists the head coach(s) in student recruitment and retention; coaches student athletes and fosters their skill development; assists in coaching plans and implementation at practices and competitions; provides for students' safety, health and wellbeing; complies with NCAA, NACC and university policies; provides sound fiscal management; assists in equipment oversight, scheduling, travel planning, and summer camps; assists in off-season programs and athlete development; and assists in program communication and fundraising efforts with the Head Coach. The assistant coach will work with the head coach(s) to build a shared vision, work collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, build and retain a diverse and talented team, foster good sportsmanship and a climate of respect, and provide an environment that supports students in achieving their athletic, academic and life goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Enables the achievement of a quality, competitive sports program and supports the educational goals of individual student-athletes by demonstrating a coaching philosophy which encourages those goals and promotes an environment conducive to both;
  • Assumes responsibility for a particular aspect of the sport as assigned by the Head Coach, planning short and long terms objectives under the leadership of the head coach, demonstrating technical expertise in the basics of the sport, and teaching the fundamentals and advanced level skills and game strategies to student-athletes, recruiting players including determining which schools to visit and which athletes to recruit, recommending the selection of team members, supervising practice sessions, scouting future opponents, providing expert advice to the head coach and team members, providing guidance or mentoring to student athletes throughout the academic year;
  • Protects the integrity of the sport coached and the reputation of the intercollegiate athletics program of the University by complying with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations as well as applicable conference rules and University policies regarding recruiting activities, student-athlete eligibility determination, scholarships and financial aid programs, scheduled practice sessions, and related covered activities;
  • Supervises and assigns responsibilities to team managers and graduate assistants and assigns day-to-day team responsibilities on road trips;
  • Reduces the likelihood of sports-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled contests by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and proper prevention methods, supervising appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warm ups, and referring injured student-athletes to qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers;
  • Supports established athletic fund-raising goals by actively participating in fund-raising events and promotional activities for intercollegiate athletics, assists in the formulation of team and department fundraising activities, and leads fundraising activities as directed by the Head Coach;
  • Promotes a positive image of the intercollegiate athletics program and the University through participation in community and professional organizations, representing the University at professional meetings as required, maintaining credible relations with various news media, serving in a leadership role and promoting participation in community service activities by student athletes, and serving as a guest speaker at public events on behalf of the University.
  • Facilitates an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds;
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Head Coach;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SPECIALIZE KNOW-HOW & SKILLS
  • Bachelor's Degree;
  • At least two years of experience in coaching at the intercollegiate level is required, however, extensive player experience at the collegiate level can be substituted for the coaching experience. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, eligibility and related functions is required
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
  • Ability to effectively manage time and priorities;
  • Ability to prioritize office workflow and make effective administrative decisions to increase efficiency, accuracy, and productivity;
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully and effectively communicate (written and verbal) with a variety of individuals;
  • Strong critical thinking skills;
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) or similar products;
  • Demonstrates organizational ability, and attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
